I jolt awake into a world of agonizing pain. My mind feels slow, heavy, and all I can sense is cold. It burns my skin worse than any fire could, chilling me to my bones, my blood. My very soul.
My vision blurs as I pry my eyes open, blinking into whatever nightmare Iâve awoken to. When my sight begins to clear, adjusting to the semi-darkness of the room Iâm in, I find the lower half of my body is submerged in icy water. Itâs contained in an elongated tub, like the troughs Iâve seen on the farms in Eisleigh. Ropes tie my ankles together and bind each of my wrists to handles on opposite sides of the tub. Panic surges through me as I whip my head from side to side. All I see are solid walls, a barred door, and my unconscious sister in the same predicament as Iâm in, her tub just a few feet from mine.
Itâs clear now that weâre trapped in a prison. A dungeon. And the ice-cold water tells me our captors have every intention of suppressing my powers.
My teeth chatter as I yank my wrists as hard as I can. Itâs no use, of course. I hardly have strength in my limbs to move, and the bindings are tied tight.
To my horror, my movement seems to stir a previously unnoticed presence, a dark silhouette leaning against the wall. I bite back a scream until my eyes fall on the shape of antlers. A sob of relief crawls from my throat as Aspen pushes off the wall and races to my side. âFor the love of oak and ivy, youâre awake.â Warm hands move to my cheeks, and I nearly moan at the comfort they bring me.
âGet me out of here.â My words come out weak, jagged through my chattering teeth.
His expression darkens, shifting between rage and sorrow as he brushes a damp strand of hair off my face. âIâve tried. I can only touch you. Nothing else is affected by me.â
Of course. Why didnât I see the violet aura before? Aspen isnât really here. âDid they take my daggers?â Not that theyâd do us any good if Aspenâs touch can only affect me. Still, Iâd feel a lot better if I knew they were there.
Aspen leans in closer and slides his hand beneath one of the open sides of my sodden dress, running his fingers along my cold flesh. In any other situation, his touch would feel seductive. Right now, it only crushes me with disappointment. For if I can feel his hand flat against my back, then that can only mean my weapons belt has been taken. Damn.
âHow long have I beenâ¦â
âTwo days,â he says, pulling back and moving his hands to my shoulders to warm them. âDo you know where you are?â
âThe last thing I saw was Dahlia,â I say. âThere was a pixie with a flower. Some yellow dust. Iâm guessing Iâm in the dungeon at either Solar or Summer.â
He shakes his head.
